About a year and a half ago, we had a brief discussion in the police department about using social media to reach our community. Many of us were tired of hearing we don't know what you do and since I work nights, I often heard, "Are you the new guy?" Nope been here since 2002 but you usually don't see me unless you have a crisis.
Today, our facebook is followed by almost 3400 viewers. We have a twitter account that reaches almost 700 folks and we have a town population of about 1200 full time people. We also use a mobile app which during any given time can reach 300 residents with an instant emergency or important notification. This blog has been read 68,528 times.
As we move into next year, the Chiefs of Strafford County have talked about creating a county wide social media network that shares data across all agencies. We are also looking at the ability to send notifications through our Dispatch systems. This mean that if you travel to Barrington, Milton, Farmington etc, you will most probably know about a traffic delay or serious incident before you leave.
The International Chief of Police Association monitors Facebook and Twitter Stats. In Middleton we have 4 full time officers and 6 part time officers placing us in the 5 to 15 agency group. If we were in the 1 to 4 category, we would be in the Top 3 Category nationwide for our Facebook stats.
In order to reach the top ten in the country in the bracket we are in, we need to reach over 7000 viewers. If everyone on this page asked just one person to like our page we would be there. You physically need to go into our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MiddletonPolice and hit like as compared to liking this post.
So will you help keep yourself and your neighbors informed by spreading the news. Crime does not stop at our borders and the broader reach we have, the more quickly we can keep thousands of eyes looking out and catch the crooks looking to steal from our homes and vehicles.
