Today is national thank a police officer day. What a concept and a nice thought.
The truth is we receive plenty of thanks doing our job. We pride ourselves in the lives we have saved both during medical emergencies and critical events.
We have had many police officers outside our community comment on how many of our residents wave to the police. This is not found as much in other communities. It is also nice to see folks waiting at the end of their driveway for us as we drive down a neighborhood. They are waiting to chat and not complain.
A few things that stick out in my mind was a serious crash during which the regional TAR (Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team) was called in to assist. A local resident set up a small table at the end of her driveway. She brought out coffee and pastry for the investigators who would spend hours on scene. This left a mark on all the outside agencies. It is the Middleton Way.
During a local crisis where the swat team and multiple members of the Press responded, many commented about food and drink that had been provided. They have never seen this before. Again an example of the thanks we receive as a matter of routine and not on a single day of the year.
Because of the pride the community places in us, we maintain a little known about organization called the Middleton Police Association. We are registered as a non profit with the NH Attorney General's Office and work independently from the town. We are a Charitable Organization. Our main benefactors are Middleton Residents and Law Enforcement Officers who have experienced a crisis. Our biggest project is the Middleton Police K-9 Unit. From the start we have paid for the police dog, food and upkeep of the program. We have sent money or gift cards to local residents in need during crisis. In the past we have provided scholarships to Middleton Teens seeking criminal justice degrees.
As the economy kicked down, we let off on our fundraising efforts because folks just did not have the money and we were able to do what we do with what we had. The coffers are getting low and we are entering our high demand time. So we will be kicking off a few fundraising programs. We will be announcing our community dinners and will be running a T-Shirt Campaign. By helping us, you will be helping the community and saying thanks to law enforcement. Stay tune for our announcements on the blog and on Facebook. We look forward to a successful campaign which will enable us to give back to a Community who appreciates us.
